REPORT ON 2005 ACTIVITIES
SLSA's first organizational meetings were in April and May of 2005. We had our first board meeting on July 2, 2005 and were incorporated on August 3, 2005. While the SLSA has only been in existence for 7 months, we have accomplished much of the groundwork necessary to achieve our goals of restoring Skeleton Lake to it's historic water quality and quantity levels in that short time. Here's a partial list of what we've accomplished since our first board meeting on July 2, 2005.
Since that first board meeting about 40 volunteers have worked approximately 5,500 person-hours on behalf of SLSA to accomplish the following activities:
- Enrolled about 1,000 members.
- Incorporated as a not-for-profit society.
- Applied for charitable status.
- Opened a bank account.
- Obtained a mailing address.
- Created a website.
- Applied for government funding.
- Enjoyed some great fundraising activities.
- Conducted technical reviews of the water level problem.
- Conducted presentations for Alberta Environment, the Village of Boyle and the County of Athabasca.
- Investigated water sources for diverting water into Skeleton Lake.
- Had a positive article about our efforts published in the Athabasca Advocate.
- Met with local landowners and developers.
- Conducted inventories (including aerial flights and photo's) of Skeleton and other lakes.
- Worked with the Summer Villages of Mewatha Beach and Bondiss.
- Sent out newsletters to our members.
- Held 19 board or executive committee meetings and have met, written and emailed all sorts of people to the tune of more than 1,000 pieces of correspondence.
NOT BAD IN SEVEN SHORT MONTHS! Just wait till you see what happens next year now that we're organized and up and running!!!
It looks like 2006 will be our breakthrough year as we expect to:
- Receive charitable status and undertake significant fundraising,
- Obtain approval to begin pumping water into our lake and
- Work with Boyle to assist them to find a viable, alternate water source by January1, 2008.
