Skeleton Lake is one of Alberta's premier recreational and fishing lakes and is located approximately 160 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. Skeleton Lake has a very small area of land that drains into it; consisting of a ratio of 4 to 1 land mass compared to water surface area. The result is that Skeleton Lake is very clear as there are fewer nutrients flowing into the lake from the land, but at the same time, it is also very susceptible to declining water levels if the balance of nature is upset. With such a low watershed ratio Skeleton lake is very slow to recover after it has declined when compared to other lakes with much higher watershed ratios.
