The SLSA Story

Who we are - We are a non-profit society with approximately 1300 members from our lake community dedicated to achieving a healthy, sustainable future for Skeleton Lake.  We are a registered charity.

Our investigations - We inquire, listen, research and then, inform others of Skeleton Lake’s problems.  Through investigation of history, facts and science, we have determined that Skeleton Lake is out of balance and needs our help to get back in balance.

The main problem - Skeleton Lake’s water level has dropped over 6 feet in less than a decade while only having one drought year in that time period.  Other lakes in Northern Alberta have not dropped as significantly or as continuously over this same period.

The causes of the problem - This is not a normal fluctuation that will correct itself.  The causes for the decline in water levels are complex but many are man-made. They include increased development, altering natural water courses and the nearby Village of Boyle pumping 40 to 50 million gallons of water out of the lake each year.

The solution – Our immediate goals are to (i) take steps to fix the man-made problems that have put Skeleton lake out of equilibrium, and  (ii) pump water back into Skeleton lake to restore it to its historical levels.

What we are doing - We are working with landowners within the watershed, the relevant municipal governments, as well as both the provincial and federal governments to take steps to fix those man-made problems that we can and to ensure a healthy lake exists in the future.
