Skeleton Lake Stewardship Association is a non-profit organization incorporated under the Societies Act in the summer of 2005. We were granted charitable status with Canada Revenue Agency in 2006. We have a volunteer board of directors and a volunteer administrator. Our board of directors consists of an aerospace engineer, a lawyer, an accountant, business executives and leaders in the corporate and non-profit arena. We currently have approximately 1300 members. The objectives of the Skeleton Lake Stewardship Association are to restore the level Skeleton Lake to its historic levels. This will require increasing the level of the lake by at least 1 meter, thereby improving the water quality of the lake, and restoring its fish habitat. We have created a mission statement, charitable objects, privacy policy and are governed in accordance with the Societies Act and by our by-laws (pdf).
The concerns our group are addressing are related to a seriously declining lake level, water quality issues and decreased fish spawning habitat at Skeleton Lake, Alberta. The level of Skeleton Lake has dropped over 6 feet in just over a decade and the lake is at its lowest level since lake levels have been recorded which goes back 40 years.
This lake was until the fall of 2010 a source of domestic water for the Village of Boyle and a large number of constituents in the area of Boyle, as well as the farming community and local industry. The lake is also a source of recreation for approximately 4,000 recreational users on over 1000 properties around the lake. The objectives of the Skeleton Lake Stewardship Association are to restore the level of Skeleton Lake to a water conservation objective of 623.3 metres above sea level, educate users of the lake on water quality issues and actions that they can take, restore the fish habitat while locating a sustainable source of water for the Village of Boyle.
