The Solutions We Propose

The solutions we propose are simply:
  • increase water inflow into Skeleton Lake;
  • decrease water outflow from Skeleton Lake;
  • protect and manage Skeleton Lake's aquatic eco-system.
The objectives of the Stewardship Association is to restore the lake to a water conservation level of approximately 623.5 metres above sea level - 4 to 5 feet more than is currently in the lake. As well, we will also need to educate the public on water quality issues that need to be addressed, restore the fish habitat, all the while searching for a sustainable source of water for the Village of Boyle and surrounding area and industries.

In order to accomplish the above objectives, we are proposing a man-made diversion of water into Skeleton Lake from a nearby water source (we are investigating four potential sources of water) to preclude a further drop in level and quality. We estimate it will take five to ten years to restore Skeleton Lake to its historical level and quality of water.

We are currently exploring the viability of four potential sources of water that could be diverted into Skeleton Lake to restore its level. At this point we estimate the capital costs associated with this option include a pipeline, pumps, pump house, and electrical and have been estimated at $250,000.00. We hope to be able to draw on the assistance of volunteers to lend their expertise and hopefully even equipment to this project. Once the pipeline and pump house are installed, there will be operating costs which we estimate to run apriximately $100,000.00 per year.

A license will be required from Alberta Environment to divert the water. That license will be predicated on the results of an engineering feasibility report and an environmental and biological assessment report. The engineering study will address the structural details as to how the water will be diverted and any impacts that may occur to the source and receiving water bodies from an environmental perspective. The biological assessment of the diversion will address any issues relating to water quality, the fishery and overall aquatic health of the source and receiving water bodes. Costs for consultants reports, engineering and biological studies are currently estimated at $75,000 to $100,000.

While we are pursuing the above objectives, we also want to assist the Village of Boyle in finding an alternate source of water due to the fact that Skeleton Lake is not sustainable as their source of water. We do not plan on engaging in a confrontational or adversarial approach with Boyle on these issues, but rather wish to approach this in a collegial fashion as Boyle is our valued neighbour.
