About SLSA
Skeleton Lake Stewardship Association is a non-profit organization incorporated under the Societies Act. We were granted charitable status with Canada Revenue Agency. We have a 10-member board of directors and an administrator. Our board of directors consists of a lawyer, a chartered accountant, business executives and leaders in the corporate and non-profit arena. We have a Membership/Fundraising Committee, a Communications Committee, a Technical Committee and a Government Relations Committee. We currently have in excess of 1150 members. The objectives of the Skeleton Lake Stewardship Association are to restore Skeleton Lake to its proper status as one of the premier lakes in the province. This will require increasing the level of the lake by approximately 1 meter, improving the water quality of the lake, restoring its fish habitat and assisting in locating a sustainable source of water for the Village of Boyle. We have created a mission statement, charitable objects, privacy policy and are governed in accordance with the Societies Act and by our by-laws (pdf).
The concerns our group are addressing are related to a seriously declining lake level, water quality issues and decreased fish spawning habitat at Skeleton Lake, Alberta. The level of Skeleton Lake has dropped over 5 feet in less than 20 years and the lake is at its lowest level since lake levels have been recorded which goes back 40 years.
This lake is a source of domestic water for the Village of Boyle and a large number of constituents in the area of Boyle, as well as the farming community and local industry. The lake is also a source of recreation for approximately 3,000 recreational users on over 900 properties around the lake. The objectives of the Skeleton Lake Stewardship Association are to restore the level of Skeleton Lake to a water conservation objective of 623.5 metres above sea level, educate users of the lake on water quality issues and actions that they can take, restore the fish habitat while locating a sustainable source of water for the Village of Boyle.
In order to attain our objectives, we need to:
- Locate an alternate source of water for the Village of Boyle and its residents, including the farming community who rely on this water to support their farming activities.
- Create a man-made diversion of water into Skeleton Lake to preclude further drops in water level and quality and begin an estimated 5-year process of restoring the lake to its historical levels.
